The training took place at the Gambia Participates office at Senegambia and featured the Center for Budget and Macroeconomic Transparency (CBMT), Mr Lamin Dibba, the President of the Gambia Press Union, Muhammed S Bah and Development Expert, Mr Amadou Gaye.

Askanwi “the People’s Media”, is an innovative new media outlet providing The Gambian public with relevant, comprehensive, objective, and citizen-focused news. In the build-up to the tabling of the 2025 Budget, a total of six reporters participated in the budget report training for our reporters to better prepare them to report on the passing and implementation of the 2025 Budget.

During the introductory remarks, Gambia Participates Program Officer, Ms Annetta Mahoney delivered statements highlighting the importance of media reporting on the budget throughout the various stages, highlighting audit report findings and shining a light on public finance malpractices.

The topics covered by an Economist from CBMT included The Gambia’s budget cycle and stages, budget terminologies, the legal framework for the budget, Parliamentary processes and budget implementation. On the other hand Journalist Union Leader, Mr Bah inspired reporters with his techniques implemented in writing his award winning Business Finance and Health reports. To round up the training, Mr Gaye delivered a presentation highlighting some more budget terminologies, processes and procedures as well as critiquing published budget reports for improvements.

On behalf of the entire staff and board of Askanwi Media, we wish to extend our sincere thanks to Gambia Participates for accommodating our reporters over the two days and to our trainers for their knowledge and expertise shared with our reporters.

This is the second in house training organised by Askanwi Media after organising the first FactCheck in house training on 30th September and 1st October 2024. After this numerous FactChecks have been published by our reporters on FactCheckGambia.org and Askanwi Media.
