Hygiene Cycle, a non-profit organisation based in Germany dedicated to promoting hygiene and health education, organised a handwashing campaign for students at Gambia College Buganala Lower Basic School in Brikama on Tuesday, 28th January 2025. The event was led by Saikou Ceesay, a Gambian resident in Germany who emphasised the importance of good hygiene practices.
In her opening remarks, Headmistress Ansata Jallow expressed gratitude to Hygiene Cycle for selecting their school for the initiative. She commended the event and reiterated the importance of promoting hygiene education, emphasising that students should carry these habits beyond the school and into their homes.
Saikou Ceesay, the representative of Hygiene Cycle, highlighted the significance of good hygiene practices and urged students to adopt these habits as part of their daily lives. He explained that the goal was to educate young people, particularly children, on topics such as hand hygiene, cleanliness, and the prevention of infectious diseases. He also mentioned that the event was part of a pilot project, with plans to share documented materials with partners who are eager to support schools in The Gambia in fostering better health and effective learning.
A short video message from the CEO of Hygiene Cycle’s German International School—Accra, Jerry Sampaney, was also shared. In his message, Sampaney thanked the organising team in The Gambia for making the event a reality and encouraged students to maintain good hygiene practices to ensure their health and safety.
Lamin Sanneh, a recent graduate and health officer from Gambia College, was present at the event and advised the students to wash their hands consistently, especially before and after eating and using the toilet, to maintain good health.
Events like this play a crucial role in promoting healthy habits and raising awareness about the importance of personal hygiene among young people.
The event concluded with the students actively practicing proper handwashing techniques, followed by a photo session.
