The Minister of Transport Works and Infrastructure (MoTWI) Hon Ebrima Sillah has revealed that pre-feasibility studies have commenced and is set to conclude by October 2024 for the Banjul – Barra Bridge during the Mansa Kunda Townhall meeting on Friday 31st May 2024.
A repeat question was posed by the public asking about the government’s plans for the Banjul - Barra bridge. The Banjul - Barra route is only accessible via a Ferry, which has also been plagued with disruptions due to Ferry Service breakdowns. If a bridge is built between Banjul and Barra it will surely reduce the reliance on the Banjul – Barra Ferry and reduce travel time across the route.
Speaking at the American International University located in Kanifing Layout close to the Stadium, Hon Ebrima Sillah responded: ‘the Banjul Barra Bridge that one also the pre-feasibility studies have started and we are hopeful that by the end of October [2024] or there about the pre-feasibility study will be completed. And then a full-blown feasibility study may begin based on the outcome of the pre-feasibility report'.
The river Gambia cuts across the Banjul - Barra route.
Minister Sillah continued to explain that ‘the issue of bridging the Banjul - Barra [route] is a critical priority for the government of The Gambia and we are still committed to it but it has to be informed by real studies to help us make a decision’.
The Banjul - Barra Ferry services are currently operating only the Kunta Kinteh Ferry after it was out of service for over six weeks. The second Kanilai Ferry is currently out of service and facing repairs to be back in operation later in the year.
