As Christians around the world celebrate Christmas on 25th December commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, Gambian President Adama Barrow in his Christmas speech called on citizens to draw inspiration from Jesus' life.

The lessons from the life of Jesus should inspire us to serve humanity selflessly, brighten the lives of those in gloomy circumstances, uplift the marginalised few, educate the ignorant lot, help the sick, and tend the wounds and sorrows of those that are hurt, physically or emotionally,” he said.

Jesus is a figure respected by both Christians and Muslims and known for his remarkable works, humility and kindness towards those in need.

In the Christian theology, Jesus' birth and life are seen as a significant fulfillment of prophecies in the Old Testament of the Bible. Meanwhile, in the Muslim theology, he is regarded as a great prophet who cared for his people.

The President remarked that Gambians can never attain the characters of Jesus unless they "mutually love and care for one another."

He said, "Human beings need to support one another, regardless of who we are." Therefore, in this light, the implementation of his government’s programs is prioritised according to needs and based on the concept of inclusive development.

"The common ground within which we operate is determined by citizenship and equal rights before the law. This is the approach that can keep us united and devoted to the nation," noted the President.

Focusing on the unrest in Gaza, the West Bank, and other regions of the world, President Barrow pointed out that "it is a painful reminder that the birthplace of Jesus Christ, a symbol of love and salvation, is marked by hardship and unrest”.

The war in Gaza has been an ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups, particularly Hamas, for decades now. The situation has seen cycles of intense violence, ceasefires, and humanitarian crises, drawing international attention and condemnation.

According to a UNICEF report, "around 1.9 million people—about 9 in 10 of Gaza’s population—are estimated to have been internally displaced. Half of them children." The report also highlighted that "at least 14,000 children have reportedly been dead."
